Meeting Notes
First meeting of the 2nd iteration of President Bob Scheidt's administration.  Let's hope he gets it right this time...smiley  He is off to a good start with meeting agenda handed out before meeting and his budget all prepared for next business meeting.  Well made plans to walk out when President Bob rang the opening bell did not occur due to the usual apathy of the membership!!

President Bob reviewed a list of upcoming events which have been posted to the website calendar.  July 16 is a meeting of the newly formed Pasta Dinner Planning Committee at Dom & Marilyn's.  At least one member of the committee who will go nameless is expecting cannoli at the meeting.

July 17th is the next Board meeting and Business meeting.  August 7th is Irondequoit Police Night Out at Camp Eastman in lieu of weekly meeting.  Haccamo Carnival night is Thursday, August 15.   Bocce Night at Camp Eastman is August 21.

Program Notes
Guy Kittelsen enlightened us on the country of Singapore which he visited in 1992 on a trip to Asia.  He went to Bangkok before Singapore and there couldn't be more of a difference.  Bangkok was 3rd world-like with horrendous conditions while Singapore was modern and organized.  Singapore made great strides after World War II due to a system of government that worked.  The country was a mix of 4 different nationalities and there was a concerted effort to integrate and mix the 4 to relieve racial tension and create a more cohesive government.  It appears to have worked.  Singapore is strategically located and serves as a critical cargo hub which has created a very expensive city.  There is a tremendous variety of dialects due to the mixing of races.  "Singlish" is a mix of Singapore and English.  There is a 50th floor skywalk that connects two skyscrapers.  Organization in the country is accomplished somewhat by a very strict system of laws that are punishable offenses:  no feeding pigeons, no chewing gum, no import of cigarettes, no spitting, heavy restrictions on car ownership, no littering.  Every person is required to serve in the military when they turn 18 years old.  Offenses sometimes lead to the punishment of public caning.  High level government officials are paid well with the idea that this discourages graft.  Elections are national holidays to promote voting (and there is a fine if you do not vote).
