Meeting Notes
Tom Kosanke presided tonight.

Guests:  District Governor Dave DeMers, his wife Ann and Tom Kirchoff, our speaker tonight, Chief of Irondequoit Ambulance.

Membership:  Last week we inducted our newest member, Joey Pierleoni.  Doug Decker handled the presentation and Bob Spatola was the Sponsor.  Joey, welcome to Irondequoit Rotary!

Dictionary Program:
Last week, 91 dictionaries were handed out to the 3rd grade students at Laurelton Pardee.  Today, it was planned to hand out 85 dictionaries to Durand Eastman 3rd graders but the cold weather forced school closures.  Plan to deliver there soon.  This will complete the project.  Kudos to Ray Holla for taking leadership of this project this year.

Senior Program:  Valentine's Day (2/12) and St. Patty's Day (3/12).  Lily Lynch is leading.

Signature Project:  Details of this project were presented last week and a detailed powerpoint document went out to all club members in an email from Tom Kosanke.  A motion to support the plans for the Signature Project unanimously passed a club vote with those present plus 5 members who voted by email previously.  The proposal is for the club to support the town's plan for a new Band Shelter including lifetime naming rights plus a portion of a barrier-free playground, both on the town campus for up to $50,000.  Work on this begins this year.   Thanks to the committee for their work on moving forward with this project that was initially identified at our Strategic Planning meeting a few years ago:  Dick Butler, Therese Corrigan-Bastuk, Tom Kosanke, Jim Kozlowski, and Dave Long.
New Member Project:  Joey Pierleoni is looking at supporting a War on Terror Memorial near the Vietnam Memorial.  More details to follow.

DG Dave Demers:  DG Dave presented the club with 2 awards:  1) Every Rotarian Every Year - For clubs that achieve a minimum Annual Fund contribution of $100 per capita during the Rotary year, and every dues-paying member must personally contribute at least $25 to the Annual Fund during the year. 2)  100% Foundation Giving - For clubs that achieve an average Annual Fund contribution of $100 per capita during the Rotary year.  All thanks goes to Kenn Van Dieren who is our Foundation Chair and makes sure our club achieves these awards each year plus all other Foundation projects.

DG Dave is promoting the District 7120 Conference this year in Corning May 2-4.  All are encouraged to attend.  Early Bird registration ends January 31.  This year the conference keynote speaker is Brett Sobieraski, who has led an incredible life and is known for his ultra-distance running.  Magic and Comedy will also be performed by Sky Sands.  DG Dave promises everyone who attends will be greatly enriched, inspired for their life and Rotary, and entertained!  Every club is asked to provide a poster of our club accomplishments for the conference.

Dan Dwyer encourages all to donate to our club's Polar Plunge team called the I Rotary Ice Surfers.

Program Notes
Tom Kirchoff is Chief at Irondequoit Ambulance (IA).  Previously, Tom retired as Fire Chief in Greece.  In 2024, IA started servicing the whole town of Irondequoit.  They are on Norton Street and also at St. Paul Fire Department.  IA provides skilled EMTs and Paramedics with rapid-response Basic and Advanced Life Support ambulance services and pre-hospital ER treatment with their 7 ambulances.  In 2024, there were around 9,800 calls into IA which resulted in 7,500 ambulance runs in the town plus runs into the surrounding counties.  There is tremendous pressures on the ambulance system in terms of lack of volunteers and higher costs.  The cost of an ambulance in 2017 was $118,000 and is now $209,000.  Federal and State grants help with expenses as insurance payments (especially Medicare and Medicaid) do not cover costs per run.  Auto CPR and Intubation machines help EMT's provide better service but are costly.  There are 60 employees overall.  Other services include CPR Training (less demand recently) and medical equipment loans (walkers, canes, etc.).  911 now tracks all ambulances by GPS which help make service faster.  Based on the medical condition of the patient, the ambulance will be directed to the hospital that will provide the best care for that need.

Chief Tom invited anyone interested for a tour is welcome and he is currently looking for Board Members to serve on th IA Board.  It was noted that Irondequoit Rotary was instrumental in providing the very first ambulance for IA back in 1982 led by Dom Fantauzzo.
