Program Notes

Kyra Stephenson, founder of Nature Mind Solutions, nature-based learning coach for the Rochester City School District, and director of Helmer Nature Center was our speaker.

She was previously a science teacher in Wayne country and  Greece school district.  She noticed that it was getting harder to teach things about nature because of screen time.  The challenge was labeled “Nature deficit disorder” so a group of science teachers got together formed a group to take kids outside.

Helmer Nature Center is a gift all children should have experience as they have access to the environment. More and more people are finding a quiet space in nature.  Helmer is a welcoming space and  accessible to all. The center is available for school groups around the county to visit.

The center currently has fourteen different animals - a crow, owl,  two turtles and a  Boas the snake has been there for 40 years!
