OPENING COMMENTS

President Dan Dwyer handed out new Rotary pins. Secretary Lori Martinez was recognized for maintaining professional Board minutes for the second time and also doing “double duty” for the Business Meeting so that Jim Kozlowski has minutes for the Bulletin. President Dan stated that the Board had a lively discussion, the largest item being the budget.

BUDGET DISCUSSION AND APPROVAL    

Key points regarding budget:

• Treasurer Lynn Wozniak, President Dan Dwyer, and Past Treasurer Tom Kosanke met on 8/7 to thoroughly review budget
• Modifications were made at BOD Meeting
• Treasurer Lynn was commended for well-prepared and detailed financial report giving a clean and clear overall picture
• Some items will be omitted for clarity
• Administrative budget to be kept separate from fundraising
• See how Club is tracking Happy Dollars, Foundation and Polio
• 1 outstanding item from Changeover: more detail to follow
• Only 6 members owe dues; check submitted to Foundation to cover dues for 6 months. All should be receiving thank-you emails.
• Currently budgeting for deficit on donation side
• Treasurer reassured membership that deficit appears larger than in reality
• Chase account to be closed and CNB savings account to be opened
• Treasurer is actively revising and announced plan to bring corrections before BOD before distributing final version to membership

DURAND PARK PROJECT UPDATES

• Dave Long will send check to Morris Lumber over the next week
• Once received, delivery will take place
• Tom Kosanke reiterated that hot, wet, and stormy days should be avoided; for this reason, target date for early fall (September-October)
• Tarp has been placed over wood in secured spot at Zoo Road location

NEW MEMBER PROJECTS

President Dan called attention to combined efforts of Lily Lynch and Steve Schwock to collaborate with Irondequoit Food Cupboard. Funds will be leveraged for hygiene products for ICC. This led to announcement of Lily Lynch as speaker for 8/16 meeting.

• Lily will present as CEO of Rochester Global Connections.
• RGC was originally a division of the University of Rochester and was funded by U of R.
• Lily stepped into CEO role as active young Rotarian to revitalize RGC.
• President Dan informed Club members that new member Lori Martinez had volunteered for RGC long ago, before Lily discovered this organization. In President Dan’s words, “This is great synergy!”
• President Dan reinforced Treasurer Lynn’s suggestion from July BOD meeting, which was to expand depth and breadth of volunteering and donations
• Club members were encouraged to learn about and support RGC

CAMP HACCAMO CARNIVAL NIGHT

Treasurer Lynn reported the following:

• Children enjoyed activities like Bounce House
• Haccamo staff ran games
• Long line for train rides once farmer next door helped get train engine running. Motor definitely needs to be replaced. How can Rotary assist?
• Penfield Rotary in charge of concession
• Kids’ Kitchen added
• Ray Holla made more playhouse keys
• Bob Spatola replaced flag given to him by Ray

 NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

• Lou DiPrima stated that there was a great turnout and that the kids loved the balloons.
• Two prospective members signed up, one of whom will attend next week’s meeting: Employee of RGH, involved with Veterans’ Outreach, volunteer firefighter, Irondequoit resident
• Lou will follow up with ADG Hap Miller’s son Paul, who had expressed interest in membership

OTHER OLD BUSINESS

• Kenn Van Dieren reminded Club members that November is National Foundation Month and he has invited speaker for 11/29 meeting (Greg Blair now in charge of scheduling). Kenn will be receiving Paul Harris 8+ Pin
• Doug Decker mentioned that $200 allocated for Boy Scout troop activities was not utilized. Not enough advance notice was given in order for scouts to assist with Pasta Dinner, since they already had a prior engagement. Another $200 has been budgeted this year and Boy Scouts may be called upon again, even though membership is down to children 13 and younger (loss of senior members due to graduation).
• Lou DiPrima will send out sign-up notice for 8/23 Steak and Bocce Night. Everyone was reminded that price has been raised to $30.
• Bob Spatola eagerly provided updates to Gen. Norb Rappl Bench Project: pallet has been received, and Bob will assemble bench. Picture was shown to Club members, who agreed that Rotary emblem should be attached next to Irondequoit Rotary name. Town Supervisor will help move project forward.

NEW BUSINESS

Bench Project update dovetailed with animated discussion of MAJOR GENERAL NORBERT J. RAPPL HIGHWAY PROJECT. President Dan made sure to provide ample background information, some of which had been mentioned at BOD Meeting:

• Assemblywoman Sarah Clark is driving force behind naming section of 590 after Maj. Gen. Rappl. High-profile unveiling planned for Veterans’ Day and should be coordinated with Bench Project.
• Assemblywoman interacted with Maj. Gen. Rappl during economic crisis in 2007-2008 to assist veterans and grew to appreciate his endeavors
• Zoom meeting with Assemblywoman Clark took place on 8/7 to discuss Rotary involvement and included President Dan and Dave Long
• Assemblywoman has already ordered signs for highway
• Possibility of synchronized commemorative day on 11/11
• Bench ceremony may correlate with Town Hall Veterans’ Day activity
• Still under discussion: Highway unveiling Friday, Bench ceremony Saturday, or same day?
• Dick Butler, who is active with American Legion, should be consulted
• New member Sal Abbasey requested more backstory from Club veterans
• Tom Kosanke summarized Maj. Gen. Rappl’s connection to Rotary as well as his character:

• Was last surviving Charter member of Irondequoit Rotary
• Great humanitarian of remarkable humility: never boastful about military or humanitarian accomplishments
• Army General who served in Korean War
• Deserves to be commemorated, so all Club members want bench and highway tribute to be done fittingly

AIR SHOW OPPORTUNITY

Members were invited to volunteer at Air Show and see Thunderbirds on 8/13. Some may remember doing so in 2019.
