Meeting Notes

First night of Dan Dwyer's administration and everything seemed to be pretty buttoned up already!!  No walk-out...he was tipped off.  Guests were Peter Kelderhouse and a visiting Rotarian from California with his son-in-law.  Also attending were Andrea Collaway and Lyn Czop from Sunset House.

4th of July Parade was great.  Nice pace this year and we had an earlier slot.  Float looked great!  All thanks to our fearless leader Lou DiPrima!  Next year, need more candy!

Durand Eastman Park project - Plan is to lay a wooden walking path on areas near Durand lake.  Supplies ordered and will be sent to warehouse space on Zoo road. Plan is to do the work for this project in the next few months over a few weekends.   We will have help from Boy Scouts and Interact Club.  See Tom Kosanke for more info.

General Norb Rappl Memorial bench  -  Bench ordered.  We have a solid list of "to do's" by the town of what they will do to install the bench near the Veteran's Memorial at the town hall.  Still waiting for town council next
week meeting for the final approval.  This was presented to town board last evening.  Expected date for dedication will be Veterans Day on November 11, 2023.   Kim Romeo has been a big help working with Bob Spatola.  There will be a Rotary sign and Memorial Plaque for Norb attached to the bench.

Pasta dinner.  Nov 5 is the date.

Prez Dan is moving the monthly Board meetings to Wednesday’s before regular meeting at 5pm.   He is also adding a new member presentation during business meetings.

National Night Out.  Louis DiPrima is chairing this event again this year.  Fun night and get to meet community members.  Starts at 5:30 on August 2.  We hand out balloons to kids and inform the community about Rotary.  Wear red shirt.

Haccamo Carnival night is August 3rd. Ray Holla is chair.  The club rents a bounce house and staff some of the booths.  Good night out especially for those new members that have not yet visited Camp Haccamo. See Ray Holla for more info.

Steak and Bocce night is Aug 23 at Camp Eastman.  This is an annual social meeting at Rotary Lodge at Camp Eastman where we eat steak, socialize, and sometime even play bocce.  We will attend a concert on the beach as our 5th Wednesday social get-together in lieu of a meeting on Aug 30.

Prez Dan went over list of members who volunteered for chairing committees and doing director jobs.  All are listed on the website.

Prez Dan outlined his Top priorities for the year:

  • Fresh active engagement with new members and their projects
  • Refresh strategic plan and get it going again
  • Engage more with district projects
  • Increase membership to 50
  • Actively live "service above self"

Tom Kosanke updated us on a Plaque that will be installed at Camp Haccamo Playhouse.  It will thank Jeff Reisenberg for his donated work and supplies along with memorial for Pat Torre and the McGrail's.  Donations for other memorials are available.  See Tom.

Program Notes
B.J. Cunningham introduced Andrea Calloway,  Director of Sunset House and Lyn Czop, a volunteer at the hospice on St. Paul Street.  Andrea is the new Director and everyone that works at the house loves what they do.  It’s a house of love.  The people they meet develop great friendships.  The hospice is always in need of funding as they do not receive any government money.   Payroll has gone up recently because a program that was supplying free night aides has been eliminated.    Our club's donation of a new toilet last year was very much needed and appreciated.  Sunset House has been open for 33 years and they are very fortunate to receive help and donations from the local community.  Recently they housed their 650th resident.  The house closed during Covid and reopened in 2021.

Lyn Czop is a volunteer at Sunset House.  Her husband had cancer and needed hospice so she visited Sunset House.  It’s a home and is cozy & warm so it’s what she wanted for her husband.  Sunset House made her experience as easy as it could be for her so she felt very grateful.  She became a volunteer years later when she was ready for something different.  Now a volunteer for 2 years.  She gets a lot out of it because she is there for the resident and for the grieving families.  Still need more volunteers so help if you can.  If she can do it, anyone can!  Very worthwhile experience and feels she is really giving back to the community.  Over 65 volunteers now but always need more.
Dan presented our club's donation at the end of the presentation.
