Program Notes

Our club's Scholarship Student from East Irondequoit High School is Summer Koltay.  Summer will be attending The University of Rochester in the fall to pursue a degree in Public Health Policy and then perhaps a masters.  Summer was very busy during her high school years and her dedication to "Service Above Self" earned her our club's scholarship award.  Besides being active in the Marching Band, Color Guard, and Drum Line, she took many AP classes and was National Honor Society Vice President.  Her volunteer activity included summer work each year at the U of R Hospital in the Pediatric ward and then the OB-GYN ward.  She also was a "Zoo Teen" at Seneca Park Zoo and an energetic bell ringer for the Salvation Army.  Congratulations Summer!  You are a true scholar who represents service above self.

Steve Saluzzo is President of Bishop Kearney.  The role of President is different than that of Principal.  He has no curriculum responsibility but looks totally on the business aspects of running a High School.  He had quite a year during the Covid pandemic but was proud to be able to offer 100% in-person classes for the full year by making use of non-traditional spaces.  So the library and cafeteria became classroom space in order to meet covid guidelines.

The school made a major addition by adding in a very successful Hockey Program by converting their top floor to dorm rooms.  A Boys program was added just before the pandemic to add to the Girls Program started several years earlier.  Currently there are 80 boys and 40 girls in the Hockey program that features elite hockey players that have been very successful on the ice.  The students represent 26 states and 13 countries.  Their presence in the high school has added tremendous ethnic, geographic, and religious diversity to the school which has enriched the experiences of all students.  A major thrust recently has been to re-engage alumni into school activities and this has proven successful.  Steve and team are already very active looking to the "new normal" that will be in place for the next school year.  BK is proud to advertise 100% college placement and 100% graduation rate.  Thanks, Steve, for a very informative presentation and congratulations on achieving stellar results over an unprecedented difficult time period.
