Meeting Notes
Drawdown Dinner this year will be virtual and held on May 20th.  A skeleton crew will broadcast a one-way video stream out to all those participating in the drawdown contest.  100 tickets need to be sold and the format will remain the same.  The 1st number drawn and every 10 number will win 2 bottle of wine and $50 (also discussed changing this to a basket of goods).  We will need to capture every contestant's email so we can send the video link to them.  Still need to discuss how to handle the end of the drawdown as to how the money is divided among the last 5 numbers.  More to come on this event soon.

District Grant:  Terri Bastuk and Lynn Wozniak are creating the grant submission due next week.  The project will provide support for Irondequoit Commission Advancing Racial Equity (ICARE). The Town Board has charged ICARE with the responsibility to review, identify, develop and make recommendations about town policies, procedures, practices and programs that seek to build and grow a more equitable community.  The Mission of ICARE is: To advise the Irondequoit Town Board on how it can work to make Irondequoit a community where each individual is respected, valued and cherished regardless of their race, ethnicity, religion or cultural identity.  Our club will provide support for ICARE to: develop a website with hosting, create teen leadership training through the Urban League and run a Town Forum in September.  We will look to have someone from ICARE speak to us in an upcoming program.

The 4th of July Parade looks like it will be held.  We have submitted paperwork to participate again this year.

Earth Day project:  President Tom is meeting with the event planners to see what how we may participate.  Dates are either May 17 or 24.

President Elect Lynn Wozniak is working on details for the Crossover Installation Dinner.  She is looking at venues for June 23 or 30.

Program Notes
Guy Kittelsen presented his time in the service where he witnessed the testing of the Atomic Bomb in the spring of 1953 near Las Vegas, Nevada.  His story started as a member of ROTC at Clarkson.  He entered active service in 1952 in the Corps of Engineers and was stationed initially at Fort Dix and it was then during trips to NYC where he met his wife Ann.  He was sent to Nevada to become part of Operation Upshot Knothole - testing of atomic weapons.  He was told there would be no immediate danger but there wasn't much discussed then about the long term effects of radiation - especially on those who worked in the vicinity for longer length of time and those in the downwind areas.  On test day, he rode a school bus to the site at 4am and stood in a trench 2 miles away from ground zero.  He was told to stay down in the trench and stare at the next soldiers jacket.  At the time of the blast there was initially the most incredible bright light (like lightning up close but lasted for 6-7 seconds.  Then there was silence.  Then a vibration.  Then a huge noise followed by an intense wind going overhead.  His group then walked towards ground zero where he witnessed test structures destroyed, cactus burning, the clothes of "atomic bomb dummies" seared into the dummies,  and dead animals.  The sand at ground zero turned to glass due to the intense heat.  The blast he witnessed was 2 times more powerful than Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined.  When returning to the bus, his uniform was dusted to remove any radiative particles.   Later in his service career, Guy served in Korea as a Combat Engineer where he fortunately avoided a land mine set off by a much more unlucky coworker.   Guy feels very fortunate to be an atomic bomb survivor and never having any adverse health issues because of it.
Contributions/Fines
Multiple contributions for the health of club members and family:  Kenn Van Dieren, Kim Miranda, Bernice Rappl, Judene Scheidt, & Rob Spatola.  Norb Rappl thanks all for their support for him and Bernie.  Elena Barbone sold her house in Irondequoit and purchased a house in Penfield all in a short time frame with help from "realtor" brother Louis.  Bob & Lori Spatola are celebrating their 50 year wedding anniversary!  Several members received their Covid shots.  Ray Holla is happy that his most recent great niece will have the middle name of Ray in his honor.
